Why Most Small Business Websites in India Don't Work

By Anested Team

Walk into any small business — a bakery in Pune, a clinic in Jaipur, a coaching institute in Lucknow — and ask them about their website. Most will say something like: 'Yeah, we have one. My nephew made it. I think it's on GoDaddy somewhere.' And when you pull it up, it takes 12 seconds to load, the phone number is wrong, and there's no way to know if anyone ever actually visits it.

The real problem isn't design

It's tempting to think the problem is that these sites look bad. Some of them do, sure. But the real issue is that they're disconnected from the business. There's no tracking, so the owner has no idea if the site brings in customers. There's no lead capture, so even if someone's interested, there's no easy way to follow up. And there's zero SEO, so the site doesn't show up on Google for anything useful.

What a functional business website actually needs

  • Fast loading — under 3 seconds, especially on mobile
  • Tracking that tells you how many people visit and what they do
  • A clear way for visitors to get in touch — WhatsApp, forms, calls
  • Basic SEO so you show up when people search for what you sell
  • Content that's written for humans, not stuffed with keywords

This isn't about fancy design or expensive technology. It's about building something that actually connects to the business and gives the owner useful information. That's what intelligent infrastructure means at the smallest scale.
